Why water-based lubricant is best for silicone – and how to use it well
Lubricant is often treated as an extra, something you reach for only when there is a problem. In reality, it plays a quiet but important part in how comfortable and relaxed intimacy feels. With silicone products in particular, choosing the right one is less about enhancement and more about care.
Why lubricant matters
Comfort is where everything starts. Lubricant reduces friction, which helps your body stay relaxed rather than tense. That matters for physical ease, and it also helps you stay present instead of being distracted by discomfort.
Intimate skin is delicate. When it is dry or under tension, it is more easily irritated. A little lubricant helps protect it and lets touch feel smooth and natural.
Water-based and silicone-based
Water-based lubricant is safe with silicone products. It leaves the surface smooth and unchanged, and it rinses away easily with warm water, from your skin and from your product.
Silicone-based lubricant lasts longer on the skin, which is why some people like it. It can, however, react with silicone products over time and leave the surface sticky or damaged. That is why we always recommend water-based lubricant with every Lovqa piece.
Oils are best avoided altogether with silicone products. They can damage the material, stain fabrics and are not designed for intimate use.
Choosing a lubricant
If your skin is sensitive, a simple formula without strong scents, colours or added sensations is usually the kindest place to start. Products designed specifically for intimate use are a better choice than general purpose creams or oils.
Our own choice is Liquid Silk, a smooth, non-greasy water-based lubricant that is safe with silicone and compatible with condoms.
How to use it
Good to know
Lubricant is not a contraceptive and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. If you notice any irritation, stop using it and rinse with water, and speak to your GP or pharmacist if it continues.
Choosing a water-based lubricant is not about doing things correctly. It is about making space for ease. When your body feels comfortable, everything else can slow down.
